The Application Of Data To Solve Problems Essay Discussion
The current healthcare systems grapple with various demands, including calls for improved care quality, the need to accommodate the widespread advances in health information technologies, and the overarching need to utilize nursing informatics in solving clinical problems and bolstering decisions (Hebda et al., 2019). For instance, leveraging nursing informatics emerges as an essential tool for improving care quality and enhancing operational efficiency amidst the prevailing complexities in healthcare settings. McGonigle & Manstrian (2018) define nursing informatics (NI) as “the specialty that integrates nursing sciences with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice” (p. 308)The Application Of Data To Solve Problems Essay Discussion. In essence, nursing informatics enables healthcare institutions and professionals to make data-driven decisions and utilize information to improve processes and achieve desired outcomes.

Amidst the need to incorporate nursing informatics into clinical practices and decisions, my hospital demonstrates awareness of utilizing clinical data to improve processes and solve problems. One scenario that undercover a comprehensive utilization of nursing informatics is the culture of tracking data on operating room turnover using the interplay between a mobile application and electronic health records (EHRs). In essence, health professionals in our operating room have been grappling with various challenges, including inappropriate patient preparation, delays in initiating surgeries, and equipment sterilization issues. Consequently, these challenges compounded the challenges of ineffective pre-and post-operative care and care delays.
The feasibility of using a mobile application and electronic health records (EHRs) to improve operating room performance relies massively upon various premises, including the ability of nurses to document the reasons for the delay, including delays in signing consents, lengthy waiting for orders, patient in bathroom, and rooms not ready. In this sense, nurses can document these reasons by using codes to enable effective data tracking. Secondly, the mobile application enables healthcare professionals to visualize patient flow through the operative suite and prioritize patient that needs attention (Uddin et al., 2018). Thirdly, the application supports short message services (SMS) for text appointment reminders, enabling healthcare professionals to remotely monitor and manage patients with chronic conditions and improve operating room efficiency. Uddin et al. (2018) contend that the adoption of mobile applications that support SMS text appointment reminders increases patient attendance compared to scenarios where reminders are lacking. Although our hospital collects large-scale data from codes for operating room performance and information from the mobile applications, it is essential to interpret this data and synthesize it in manners that support improvement initiatives. For instance, the codes provided by nurses about the reasons for delayed initiation of operations in the operating room enable our nurse leaders to concentrate on a specific issue at a time. For example, we have developed a policy for addressing lengthy awaiting orders by developing an application for tracking patient orders and prioritizing patients’ severe conditions requiring immediate care. Although we have made tremendous strides in facilitating operating room performance, it is essential to note that there are multiple options for improvement. In this, we can address the problem of consistently unprepared bedside shift reports that can delay operations as well.
Undoubtedly, leveraging nursing informatics to improve operating room efficiency forms the basis of enhancing knowledge and cultivating a safety culture. As Schock & Blickensderfer (2019) contend, effective management of operating room turnover time can translate to smooth and efficient operations that address delays and ensure efficiency in resource utilization. From my hospital’s scenario, it is essential to note that the widespread advancement in mobile technologies alongside electronic health records (EHRs) can effectively support data tracking and leveraging of nursing informatics to improve care. This week’s discussion will focus on how the access and analysis of data can facilitate both problem-solving and knowledge formation. You will reflect on the concepts of informatics and knowledge work as presented in the resources. You will consider a hypothetical scenario based on your own healthcare practice or organization that would benefit from the collection and analysis of data to gain knowledge. The scenario will involve an issue or gap that impacts patients, staff, or management. The scenario needs to focus on a question that you will answer (gain knowledge) with the data you propose to collect. If you choose a patient issue, you need to collect data on many patients, this is not a case study with data from 1 patient. If you choose a staff or management issue, you need to collect data a group of people. The scenario needs to derive knowledge from the process of gathering and analyzing the data collected from groups of people.
Here is an example of a scenario: The Application Of Data To Solve Problems Essay Discussion
Due to a rise in 30 day readmissions, a nurse care coordinator has been assigned a panel of CHF patients whose vital signs, weight, and oxygen saturation will be remotely monitored upon discharge to their home. Clinical algorithms will process this data and send alerts to the nurse when the data indicates deterioration in the health status of the patient. This alert triggers the nurse to contact the patient. The nurse thinks it will beneficial to gather this clinical data and other data on the utilization of services (30 days readmissions, ED visits, and clinic visits) to determine the impact of remote monitoring on health status and utilization of healthcare services. You will post a description of the focus of your scenario.

You will describe the data that could be used and how the data might be collected and accessed. You will discuss what knowledge might be derived from that data. Finally considering your role as a nurse leader you will explain how you would use clinical reasoning and judgment in the formation of knowledge from this experience. Remember your scenario needs to focus on groups of patients or staff. The Application Of Data To Solve Problems Essay Discussion
