As nurses transition to the role levels, they embrace new responsibilities not necessarily in their previous roles. Therefore, they must prepare and ensure proficiency in the new roles and their responsibilities (Woroch & Bockwoldt, 2021). This discussion presents the responsibility that I anticipate as a nurse practitioner (NP) in family nurse practitioner (FNP), which is not in the registered nurse (RN) scope of practice, and how I will ensure proficiency in the area. One specific responsibility I anticipate as an FNP that falls outside the scope of practice for RNs is independently diagnosing and managing acute and chronic illnesses across the lifespan. Rivera et al. (2021) note that independent practice for FNPs includes developing comprehensive treatment plans, which may involve prescribing medications, ordering diagnostic tests, and initiating referrals to specialists as needed. To ensure proficiency in diagnosing and managing conditions beyond the basic training in my program, I intend to engage in continuing education programs regularly, leverage healthcare technology by utilizing clinical decision support tools, and continuously review current clinical guidelines and evidence-based research.
