Role Of Research And Research Process For Advanced Registered Nurses Paper

Evidence-based practice (EBP) projects address issues through solutions informed by scientific data. One such issue in oncology nursing is staff well-being, which can be improved through mindfulness-based exercises (Urso et al., 2022; Wang et al., 2023). As nursing recommends, project proponents should utilize scholarly evidence to support their recommended interventions. For the current project, peer-reviewed nursing articles (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods studies) would be required to investigate the issue further. These sources should support the implementation of mindfulness-based exercises in improving oncology nurses’ well-being. Broadly, the sources should demonstrate a positive link between mindfulness exercise and reducing poor well-being indicators like burnout, depression, and anxiety.

Urso et al. (2022) evaluated the impact of mindfulness as an antidote to burnout among oncology nurses and support staff. This pilot study is related to the topic since it demonstrates a positive association between mindfulness and burnout reduction among nurses. Based on the currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose (CRAAP) test, I would evaluate the appropriateness of the research article by exploring how it meets these crucial elements. An appropriate article should be published within the last five years (current), related to the topic (relevant), and written by experts (authoritative). Other criteria include truthful and correct data (accurate source) and information to inform and educate nurses (purposeful). The information should be factual, underlining the need for peer-reviewed primary studies.

Nursing research should meet the criteria outlined in the CRAAP test to ensure it is credible, verifiable, and appropriate as a scientific data source. The article by Urso et al. (2022) meets the CRAAP test’s five criteria since it is current (not older than five years), and the information is relevant since it relates to the topic (oncology nurses’ well-being). The authority element focuses on the author’s credentials, while accuracy entails the source of information and whether it is supported by evidence (New Jersey Institute of Technology, 2024). The article is a peer-reviewed source, written by experts, and provides data from a pilot study. Its purpose is to inform nurses and leaders on how to address burnout in high-demand work environments such as the oncology units.

Review the evidence-based practice project ideas you described in Topic 5 DQ 1. Based on your initial ideas, what types of scholarly nursing research (such as quantitative or qualitative research, peer-reviewed resources, etc.) would be required to further investigate the issue? Select an article related to your topic. Identify the criteria you would use based on the CRAAP test to evaluate the appropriateness of the research. Why is it important to select research that meets these criteria? Evaluate the “CRAAP Test” article from the New Jersey Institute of Technology Library, located in the topic Resources. Explain the five criteria as they relate to your selected article.Role Of Research And Research Process For Advanced Registered Nurses Paper

Topic 5DQ1

Evidence-based practice projects lead to improvements in nursing by addressing issues and improving patient outcomes. These projects are guided by scientific evidence to implement the desired solutions in a practice area. An area where I work requiring improvement in oncology nursing is staff well-being. Due to the nature of the work, oncology nurses are continually exposed to loss, severe patient suffering, and intense clinical workloads. As per Kelly et al. (2024) frequent exposure to such experiences increases the risk of burnout, compassion fatigue, and occupational stress. Besides, oncology nurses are highly vulnerable to emotional distress since they suffer by directly witnessing the impact of cancer on patients. If oncology nurses’ well-being is not improved, their capacity to provide comprehensive patient care is reduced. Nursing research supports different interventions, with mindfulness-based exercises highly recommended for reducing burnout, stress, and emotional exhaustion (Urso et al., 2022). The intensity and variety of the exercises vary depending on the condition of staff well-being in the oncology unit.

Nursing theories provide structured ideas for understanding patient care practice and how to address complex problems. Maslach’s theory of burnout explains how burnout manifests through emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a declining sense of professional efficacy (Edú-Valsania et al., 2022). Nursing theory admits burnout as a psychological syndrome affecting nurses’ well-being that causes reduced commitment to work. The other theory for addressing oncology nurses’ well-being is Jean Watson’s theory of human caring. Watson defined health as the harmony among mind, body, and soul, which provides coherence and reduces anxiety and internal turmoil (Bagheri et al., 2023). Watson further expressed care as the core of nursing practice, prioritizing intentional attempts to enhance health and well-being. Watson’s theory is the best to apply in addressing staff well-being since it demonstrates how to achieve a caring-healing environment. Human caring should be applied to nurses to enable them to find a caring consciousness, which is critical in embracing self-care and promoting effective patient care.
