Professional Roles In Nursing Essay Paper

After listening to Mr. Newcomb’s request, I would respond with many thoughts and emotions. I would first be surprised, seeing how his wife has been there for him and how much they share deep love. While as a human with friends, colleagues, and loved ones, I would respond with such a surprise. I would still remember that I owe Mr. Newcomb a responsibility and commitment to advocate for him as a patient, and therefore, I would do away with my emotions and focus on how to grant him his wish. I would do this by following the rules of autonomy, beneficence, non-harm, and justice. Professional Roles In Nursing Essay Paper

Autonomy

Pesut et al. (2020) defined autonomy as the personal right and freedom to make choices. In this scenario, Mr. Newcomb is a competent person who can exercise their freedom and fairness by making any choice that fits their interests. As such, he is aware that while it is morally wrong to have a mistress, his wish to see his mistress should not be taken for granted. I am therefore obliged as his nurse to respect and grant him his wish, despite my misgivings towards having a mistress.

Non-maleficence and beneficence

Nurses must also consider the principles of non-maleficence and beneficence. It entails acting in the patient’s best interest by considering and maintaining a balance between the benefits and risks of engaging in any action (McDermott-Levy et al. 2018)Professional Roles In Nursing Essay Paper. Mr. Newcomb is asking the nurse to cover for him and facilitate the visit of his mistress because it would be emotionally hurtful for his wife to know that he has a mistress.

While arranging for Mr. Newcomb to see his mistress will benefit him, a significant level of maleficence may occur if Mr. Newcomb’s wife learns about the arrangement and confronts her husband about it. Furthermore, denying Mr. Newcomb his desires may be of maleficence to him. As a result, the nurse needs to be careful so that no one is hurt.

Justice

Nurses must always be fair when handling their patients. According to Rainer et al. (2018), justice in the context of nursing involves delivering services and other essential resources to the patient regardless of other factors such as ethnicity, socio-economic status, and sexual orientation. Mr. Newcomb deserves what he desires. And as his nurse, I would make every effort to ensure he received his final wish. Professional Roles In Nursing Essay Paper

If I decided to maintain my personal beliefs and wishes while caring for Mr. Newcomb, I would probably not grant him his desire to see his mistress. As a person in an intimate relationship with my partner, I know how to hurt Mrs. Newcomb would be if she realized Mr. Newcomb had a mistress. Also, as a Christian, I would consider it sinful to grant him his wishes.

Strategies to promote self-care

One of the most effective self-care strategies is healthy eating and physical exercise. Appropriate diet and regular exercise are viewed as the first lines of defense in the fight against obesity and cardiovascular disease. Stress management is another method of self-care. Stressed-out nurses have been reported to be more prone to obesity, increased alcohol intake, and sleep disturbances. Another form of self-care that nurses should engage in is maintaining healthy relationships. Healthy relationships enhance eating habits and encourage people to begin exercising routines.
