Professional Development Plan Discussion Paper
Five-Year Professional Development Plan
Short-Term, Intermediate, and Long-Term Goals
Short-term Goals
Soon, I aim to finish the RN-BSN program at Western Governors University before the year ends. To make this happen, my strategy involves wrapping up the remaining 13 competency units by December 2024. I intend to set aside dedicated study hours, make use of available resources such as tutors and study groups, and keep a close eye on my progress to tweak my study schedule accordingly. Should I face any challenges along the way, I will not hesitate to reach out to my instructors for guidance and support. Additionally, I plan to stay organized by creating a detailed study plan and breaking down the remaining competency units into manageable chunks. This will help me stay on track and ensure that I cover all the necessary material before the end of the year. I also aim to prioritize self-care and maintain a healthy work-life balance to avoid burnout and stay motivated throughout the program. This includes regular exercise, adequate sleep, and taking breaks when needed. Furthermore, I will actively seek opportunities for hands-on experience and practical application of the knowledge and skills I acquire in the program. This will not only enhance my learning but also prepare me for the transition into a professional nursing role upon completion of the program. Ultimately, my goal is to graduate from the RN-BSN program with a strong academic foundation, practical experience, and the confidence to excel in my nursing career. I am committed to putting in the hard work and dedication required to achieve this milestone Professional Development Plan Discussion Paper.

Intermediate Goals
Over the next three years, my objective is to acquire a minimum of one year of professional experience in an ICU environment. This will involve actively seeking out ICU positions within local hospitals or healthcare facilities, participating in ICU-focused workshops and training sessions, seeking guidance from seasoned ICU nurses, and continuously improving my critical care abilities through ongoing education. Additionally, I am working towards the intermediate goal of preparing for the Nurse Anesthetist program in Oakland. To achieve this, I will initiate the application process by thoroughly researching the program’s prerequisites and requirements, preparing for and completing the GRE if necessary, gathering transcripts, letters of recommendation, and personal statements, and fulfilling any required shadowing or clinical hours with a Nurse Anesthetist. Once all necessary documents are obtained, I will proceed to submit applications to my selected programs Professional Development Plan Discussion Paper.
Long-term Goals
My ultimate objective is to finish the Nurse Anesthetist program in Oakland successfully. I plan to register for the program, fulfill the necessary coursework and clinical rotations, actively participate in all educational opportunities, solicit feedback, and establish connections with peers and faculty for assistance and cooperation. Upon completing the program, I will prepare for and pass the National Certification Examination for Nurse Anesthetists (Vitale & Lyons, 2021). Upon acquiring my certification, I aim to secure a role as a Nurse Anesthetist in a healthcare facility. To accomplish this, I will update my resume and LinkedIn profile to showcase my new qualifications, apply for Nurse Anesthetist positions in my preferred locations, prepare for interviews by rehearsing common questions and scenarios, and continue my professional development to uphold necessary certifications.
Current Certificates or Certifications Requirements
Currently, I hold certifications in Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support. In order to uphold my existing certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS), I must undergo recertification every two years. The recertification process for BLS entails participating in a hands-on skills session and passing a written exam to ensure competence in administering CPR and utilizing an AED. On the other hand, for ALS, a more comprehensive recertification procedure is required, which includes a hands-on skills session, a written exam, and a practical exam that evaluates my capability to handle intricate cardiovascular emergencies, such as advanced airway management, pharmacology, and cardiac resuscitation. Furthermore, I am obligated to fulfill the mandatory continuing education units (CEUs) for both certifications, keep abreast of the most recent guidelines and best practices issued by the American Heart Association (AHA), and consistently review and practice the necessary skills to sustain my proficiency and preparedness to deliver top-notch emergency care Professional Development Plan Discussion Paper.
Future Certificates or Certifications Requirements
My future plans include obtaining certifications as a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) and a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). To achieve these certifications, I must first meet specific educational and clinical experience prerequisites. For the CCRN certification, I will need to possess a valid RN or APRN license, complete a designated number of clinical practice hours in an acute/critical care environment, and successfully pass the CCRN exam, which evaluates my proficiency in critical care nursing. To uphold the CCRN certification, I will have to engage in continuing education activities related to critical care and periodically pass recertification assessments. In pursuit of the CRNA certification, I must graduate from a Nurse Anesthetist program at the graduate level, which involves intensive coursework and hands-on training in anesthesia practices. Upon graduation, I will be required to pass the National Certification Examination for Nurse Anesthetists to earn the CRNA designation. Sustaining the CRNA certification necessitates meeting continuing education requirements specific to anesthesia, staying abreast of advancements in anesthesia techniques and patient care, and participating in recertification procedures that will involve examinations or professional development engagements.
Education Requirements
In order to successfully graduate from my RN-BSN program, I must fulfill 120 competency units by December 2024, which encompass coursework in advanced nursing practice, leadership, and research. Pursuing the Nurse Anesthetist program will require me to complete graduate-level coursework and clinical training in anesthesia, a process that usually spans 2-3 years and involves extensive clinical rotations. With 107 units already completed, my focus now lies on finishing the remaining 13 units by dedicating time to study, completing assignments, and utilizing available resources such as tutors and study groups. Following the completion of my BSN, I will need to meet the prerequisites for the Nurse Anesthetist program, which include holding a BSN degree, gaining a minimum of one year of ICU experience, and potentially taking the GRE (Tamura et al., 2021). Additionally, I will need to gather transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement as part of the application process for the Nurse Anesthetist program. Once accepted into the program, I will undergo rigorous graduate-level coursework and clinical training over 2-3 years to prepare for the National Certification Examination for Nurse Anesthetists, necessitating a strong commitment to academic excellence, effective time management, and continuous learning to achieve my educational aspirations Professional Development Plan Discussion Paper.
Work Experience Requirements
To attain the necessary work experience, I need to secure and complete a minimum of one year of employment in an ICU setting. This entails actively seeking out ICU nursing positions, preferably within hospitals or healthcare facilities renowned for their robust critical care departments. Once employed, I must fully immerse myself in the ICU setting to develop crucial critical care skills, including advanced patient monitoring, ventilator management, and emergency response. It will be vital for me to engage in ongoing education through ICU-specific workshops, seminars, and training sessions. Seeking mentorship from seasoned ICU nurses will offer valuable guidance and assistance, aiding me in navigating the intricacies of critical care. Furthermore, participation in interdisciplinary team activities will enhance my collaborative skills and provide a comprehensive understanding of ICU care. This ICU experience is essential not only for meeting the prerequisites for the nurse anesthetist program but also serves as the foundation for developing the advanced clinical competencies necessary for a career as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA)Professional Development Plan Discussion Paper.
Being a Change Agent through this Plan
I aim to apply evidence-based methods, enhance patient results, and champion for policy adjustments within my institution and the wider healthcare sector by furthering my education and obtaining specialized certifications. Additionally, I aspire to act as a model and guide for fellow healthcare practitioners, nurturing an environment of ongoing development and professional advancement. Strengthening my expertise and understanding will enable me to deliver exceptional, empathetic care, especially in crucial and end-of-life scenarios, ultimately enhancing the experiences of patients and their families.
