My first exposure to nursing theory was during nursing school. I remember the course “Nursing Theories and Conceptual Frameworks,” which introduced the theories that form the foundation of nursing practice. Even though it seemed complicated initially as we explored the historical evolution of nursing theories, it got interesting as time went by, as I learned about the key nursing theorists and their contributions to shaping the nursing profession as we know it today. In addition, I found the various nursing theories very interesting, as each has a unique contribution to providing patient-centered care and advancing the nursing discipline.

One of the theories I found most interesting is the Self Care Deficit Theory by D. Orem. The theory is based on the patient’s ability to perform self-care and assumes that the nurse’s role assists the patient when there is a deficit. According to Hartweg and Metcalfe (2022)Nursing Theory Discussion, the self-care deficit theory has continued to guide nursing care planning as nurses guide patients in achieving self-care goals. The theory stood out for me as it emphasizes the role of the nurse to the patient and the importance of working in collaboration with the patient/their families to achieve common goals.

My initial exposure to nursing theory changed my perception of nursing practice by increasing my understanding of why we do what we do. In addition, nursing theory reinforced my knowledge of theoretical foundations in nursing and its application in clinical practice. By understanding the theories and theorists’ perspectives, I got the confidence to provide high-quality patient care and contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession Nursing Theory Discussion.
