Orem Self-Care Deficit Theory |
Why is this a good choice of theory?
The theory elucidates how nurses can and should intercede to assist patients’ independence in self-care. Applying the theory to patients results in affirmative peritoneal dialysis therapy upshots. Significantly, the hypothesis suggests that individuals have an inherent capability for self-care, and the nursing profession should concentrate on categorizing self-care deficit areas (Regis College, 2021). The theory maintains that patients recover better when they uphold autonomy over their self-care. How does this selected theory apply to this policy? The theory applies to the policy because it assists nurses when identifying the focus areas during patient care. Further, integrating the hypothesis and its methods can influence patients’ results with chronic renal failure and other conditions (O’Shaughnessy, 2014). Orem’s theory also highlights the significance of patients maintaining independence during self-care procedures, including proper hygiene, dressing well, and feeding well.

13. Training home patients to uphold self-care and monitor their health status. · Integrating self-care when using equipment to monitor heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and weight; evaluating vascular or peritoneal dialysis access; recognizing adverse signs and symptoms; and when, how, and whom to contact if they experience problems with their health or treatment. · Using Orem’s assumptions to identify self-care deficits. Orem’s theory defines self-care as the care a person gives oneself to facilitate effective, controlled, consistent, and purposeful action (O’Shaughnessy, 2014). Self-care sustains health through health endorsing activities and managing disease (Riegel, Jaarsma & Strömberg, 2012). · Reminding patients that they become active participants in managing illnesses when they engage in self-care. Orem’s theory encompasses three phases: gathering patient information such as needs, health, and goals, planning to assist the patient with self-care deficits, and the nurse collaborating with the patient to meet the deficits (Regis College, 2021). Orem’s theory concentrates on the specific situations that require nurses’ attention. |

2.Staff responsibilities concerning training and treatment, including elderly patients requiring renal replacement therapy. · Providing peritoneal dialysis therapy to patients. Peritoneal dialysis therapy is a practical alternative for all persons with renal failure, as long as they are willing to integrate self-care measures (O’Shaughnessy, 2014). The therapy provides the elderly with an enhanced quality of life and self-worth. · Encouraging patients to maintain independence over their self-care procedures. Orem’s hypothesis of self-care deficits, such as incapacity to dress well and maintain proper hygiene, clarifies how nurses can intercede to assist patients in sustaining independence (Regis College, 2021). Orem’s theory is fundamental in educating and training patients to conduct home therapy (O’Shaughnessy, 2014). Identifying patients’ self-care deficits will allow nurses to address specific areas that require attention.
