Overview
In professional nursing practice, you will use an objective, balanced, and deliberate application of current evidence and the most reliable data to determine policy updates, guide practice decisions, or defend the current clinical practice guidelines for supporting a person-centered approach in healthcare. Rather than depending on anecdotal or professional experience, the goal with any evidence-based approach is to guide your work with empirical research and critical reviews of current research literature. In doing so, it is important to determine the credibility of published evidence before analyzing how it shapes recommendations to current practice.
When developing an evidence-based implementation plan, you need to identify an appropriate EBP model, methodology, and the best statistics to defend the change in practice. It is also important to determine any ethical considerations such as privacy, population, or settings. When deciding on the best EBP model, there are many to select from. Whichever model is selected needs to support the PICOT question. When this is being determined, the setting, stakeholders, communication options, and problem of concern should all be considered. The next step is determining the methodology, which must match the practice concern that was identified by the PICOT question. Another important component to consider is how addressing the concern will improve quality and safety in the practice setting. Collectively, all of these areas will contribute to the formation of a robust evidence-based practice (EBP) plan or recommendation.
Scenario
In your earlier project, you already completed a systematic literature review. Now you will outline an evidence-based implementation plan that addresses the next four to five steps of the evidence-based process for your chosen problem from your identified practice setting. Since you previously worked to analyze the available literature, it is time to communicate your specific recommendations based on the evidence. Consider what changes you would recommend for implementation in practice and how you would develop an effective plan. Your evidence-based plan should be rigorous and able to be replicated in multiple areas of practice. As you work, be sure to bring in the perspective of your future role as an MSN professional nurse, where you will be leading change and coaching interprofessional teams on the importance of EBP. Directions
You will develop an evidence-based implementation plan to detail your recommended change in practice, based on the systematic literature review you already completed for your chosen problem from your current practice setting. As with your review, at least 10 scholarly sources, which are current (within the last five years), must be incorporated in your plan. The plan you create should be developed as a PowerPoint presentation, which can effectively convey your recommendations. Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
- Model: Explain the appropriate evidence-based practice model to address your PICOT question. Remember, the model you select should be based on your practice setting. Once you have decided on the model and connected it to your PICOT question, be sure to explain why it is important and how it would be appropriate to use. Essentially, why should it be adopted for a practice change? Address the following in your explanation:
- Background information to effectively communicate with those you are presenting to, including setting, population, and the problem of interest
- The importance of adopting a common model to guide evidence-based practice for this specific EBP project within your organization
- Key criteria (such as relevance, rigor, feasibility, and usability) when deciding on outcomes to measure
- Methodology: Explain relevant methods to address your PICOT question. Address key aspects of your chosen methods, which include design, procedures, measurement, analysis, and interpretation. Then discuss how your methods are influenced by the following:
- Internal and external validity
- The type of statistics used to support your PICOT question
- Sustainability and Implications: Discuss the sustainability and implications to your recommended change in practice. Consider the following questions in your response:
- What strategies would you use for future sustainability?
- How can you support this change in your future practice as an MSN professional nurse?
- What are the anticipated barriers, biases, and limitations?
- Is the change in practice feasible? Consider financing, stakeholders, piloting, timeline, and buy-in from your audience.

- Outcomes: Recommend how outcomes should be evaluated for your evidence-based implementation plan. Remember, outcomes are the end result of your EBP implementation plan, which assist in measuring the results of your PICOT question. In other words, what are you seeking as a positive effect on your practice setting? Will your EBP decrease cost, decrease length of stay for patients, increase retention of nurses in healthcare, improve job satisfaction, or improve collaborative practice? Consider the following questions as you form your response.
- Are your outcomes sensitive to change?
- How will you measure the outcome of interest? How often do you expect to measure the outcome? Consider whether you would do this at a baseline, 90 days after implementation, or using another duration.
- Is there a valid and reliable instrument that you could use to measure the outcome(s) of interest?
- Will you need to conduct any training to assist in measuring the results of the EBP? You may wish to discuss statistical analysis, including descriptive (percentage, means, mode, or standard deviation) or inferential statistics. Consider bringing in inferences from the sources you found to anticipate how implementation of EBP would occur in your practice.
- Ethical Considerations: Explain how your evidence-based implementation plan is ethically appropriate. First, identify the ethical and legal principles that will guide your evidence-based implementation plan. Then, explain how you will be sure your EBP plan takes into account these ethical and legal principles. To support your response, consider the preservation of protected personal information including privacy and HIPAA rules. In addressing ethical considerations, consider the following in your response.
- The benefits and risks
- The need for any informed consent
- Vulnerable populations
- Privacy and confidentiality
- Future Plan: Create strategies for implementing your evidence-based practice plan. Consider the following questions when determining how you would implement your plan in the future.
- How would you promote adoption of your EBP plan?
- Who are your audience and key stakeholders?
- What would be the ideal setting for implementing your EBP plan?
- What are some challenges you need to plan for as part of implementation?

To complete this project, you must submit the following:
Evidence-Based Plan
Your submission should be a 10- to 15-slide PowerPoint presentation. Also include a title slide and references slide. Use speaker notes with in-text citations to ensure you fully address all criteria in the rubric. Sources should be cited according to APA style.
