NR 447 Week 1 Collaboration Cafe: How Do You Lead?

How Do You Lead?

My nursing practice has been guided by a sense of empathy, integrity, and working as a team. These are some of the significant values that shape my leadership approach in such a way that empathy enables me to create a rapport with both my team and patients, hence encouraging a supportive environment (Moudatsou et al., 2020). Integrity makes me lead by example through transparency in my actions and decisions. All put together, these elements create the core of my leadership style and the foundation on which trust and free communication with my team are developed.

The moment that comes to my mind when I reflect on my professional experiences is the leadership of a project aiming at an upgrade in our unit’s patient care protocols. This leading role in my current position as a nurse developed based on my nursing background and the experience I gained during my work with teams (Qtait, 2023). I have learned that listening actively and keeping all members involvement in the decision-making processes helped to bring improvement to the results of our projects, empowering my team (Leroy et al., 2021). Thus, a collaborative approach forms the building block for my leadership philosophy- standing on mutual respect and shared goals as the effective leadership two-way street.

There are many instances when my nursing values guided me to act in a particular way, especially in difficult situations. For instance, I remember a situation whereby the family had to make a tough decision concerning the end-of-life care of their patient. In such a situation, my stand on the ethical principle of autonomy made me support the desires of the family while at the same time ensuring that the family was informed enough to make a choice (Pugh, 2020). This principle made the experience positive; it gave them the support required by the family at such a critical time. It underscored the significance of ethical leadership in nursing, and just how much our values can have on those we are serving.
