However, healthcare providers, including nurses, are at the frontline in influencing healthcare policies and resources to the advantage of the health population. Nurses advocate for equitable use of resources, change, and development of policies that affect patient populations and disaster preparedness to protect people in the event of disasters. According to Scott and Scott (2021), the nurse advocate prioritizes healthcare delivery from a policy standpoint by presenting patient population needs to the policymakers and pushing for changes affecting these populations. 733 Nurse Advocate

I have experienced my role as a nurse advocate through active participation in a nursing advocacy movement. A professional nursing organization led the advocacy movement in my state with the aim of bringing nurses together to present patients’ needs to policymakers. For example, we advocated for more resources meant for diabetes care to be allocated to patient populations that have a higher prevalence of the disease.

Furthermore, nurses face situations leading to improved patient care, which may be a dilemma or an opportunity for advocacy. Haddad and Geiger (2023) note that an ethical dilemma is a situation whereby there is a conflict between two moral principles/values, while an opportunity for advocacy involves a gap that needs an action aimed at promoting a patient’s well-being. The actions I can take to advocate for a culture of safety in my practice setting include reporting incidents and continuous education on safety protocols and guidelines. In my current practice, there has not been a patient advocate staff available for patients/families. However, I believe the role is essential. Scott and Scott (2021) support the role of nursing advocacy in an institution, arguing that nurses understand patient needs best since they are closer to the patients.

733 Information Technology and Data to Inform Policy

One of the national healthcare policy briefs, which will be the focus of this discussion, is “Public Policies to Address Residential Segregation and Improve Health” by Steil and Lens (2023). The policy brief was issued on April 2023 following the effects of residential segregation, income, and race on health. Despite the availability of policies to address the issue, there is still a huge gap that has not been addressed, mainly due to limited resources and attention.

The data that was used in the evidence to inform the policy brief included research and study results. The policy team studied the negative effects of residential segregation and the impacts on the health of the affected populations despite the availability of policies to address the issue. Research literature was used to provide relevant information on the progress of current policies in addressing the issue. According to Burau and Blank (2020), information technology is crucial in informing policies and improving evidence-based healthcare delivery. As a nurse advocate, I will use information technology and data to compare and benchmark policy impacts from other systems. In addition, I can use electronic technology to share policy proposals, thus mobilizing other nurses to join the advocacy.

733 Political Competence

Political competence for nurses refers to political knowledge, efficacy, interaction, and activity (Han & Kim, 2020). Political knowledge stands for the political information the nurse has and the ability to perform systematic analysis. Political efficacy, on the other hand, entails internal and external efficacy and pride in the nursing profession. Political interaction entails community service, networking, and persuasive power, while political activity entails assertive behavior, advocacy, participation, and policy intervention. Wilson et al. (2020) note that nurses should consistently develop their political competency with the aim of playing the advocacy role. Among these attributes, there are areas in my political competence that require growth. These areas include persuasive power, the ability to perform systematic analysis, advocacy, and networking.

Nurses should actively develop their political competency activities using a set goal and timeline. I intend to actively develop the political competency attributes mentioned above through policy activities, including volunteering in policy committees, task forces, and policy research and analysis. The policy activities will help me achieve the goal within the next 18 months. However, there might be barriers that may hinder progress. Considering the heavy workload in nursing practice, these barriers include inadequate time and resources to conduct policy research and analysis and to volunteer in policy committees.

The issue of affordable and inclusive healthcare is highly divisive politically and economically, mainly due to the differences in political ideologies, cultural differences, and beliefs surrounding the issue. There are various specific reasons why the issue of affordable and inclusive care is divisive, including socioeconomic disparities, public perceptions and misinformation, and the complexity of the healthcare system. The healthcare system is dynamic, and changes often occur, especially in the delivery forms and practices. The future changes in the U.S. healthcare delivery system and global agencies that may provide an opportunity for nursing to improve healthcare are advocating for the autonomy of nurses in practice and standardizing the nursing practices and roles across different healthcare systems. According to Nardi et al. (2020), passing nurses’ autonomy is a change that would positively impact the healthcare system. There are still some states that are restricting nursing scope of practice, limiting them to practice at their full capacity. Lifting this barrier would increase the number of healthcare providers, especially those practicing in primary healthcare settings, due to autonomous practice. In addition, there should be standardized practices and roles across health systems to allow nurses to work anywhere.

Healthcare providers play a crucial role in evaluating the effectiveness of existing policies, thus proposing solutions for existing issues or changes that should be made to existing policies to address the policy issues. Evaluating the effectiveness of an existing policy is crucial in determining whether it is achieving the intended objectives and making a positive impact. McGill et al. Healthcare providers play a crucial role in policy development from regional, national, and global perspectives (Spicer et al., 2020). I believe a healthcare leader has the knowledge and ability not only to propose but also to influence policy development and change. According to Restivo et al. (2022), healthcare leaders can influence policy development by liaising with other healthcare leaders and policymakers to advocate for policy development and changes on a certain issue. Additionally, healthcare leaders can influence other healthcare providers, thus getting the numbers or quorum required to propose changes in a certain policy or participate in policy committees and task forces.

Being able to influence policy for healthcare leaders is essential in ensuring the policies developed align with the needs of the health populations and can address these needs. I believe healthcare leaders are best suited to understand and propose solutions for various policy issues, especially in public health. Thus, being able to influence policy ensures that the needs are met.
