Functional Assessments and Cultural Diversity Awareness in Health Assessment Paper
Post an explanation of the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors associated with the patient you were assigned. Explain the issues you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient and why. Please provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build their health history and assess their health risks.
Case Study Wk 2 :
Shawn Billings, a 28-year-old African American patient, comes into the clinic today. He has been deemed a “frequent flyer†by the staff at the clinic and was at the clinic last week and four days ago with a migraine; he was given a shot of Toradol and Ativan and sent home. He is here today again for an extreme headache. He is very agitated today. He is with his father and is worried he will not get any medication. Socioeconomic, Spiritual, and Lifestyle Factors Associated with the Patient’s Life
Shawn Billing, a 28-year-old African American patient, is the subject of the case study. Because of his frequent visits to the clinic, he is dubbed a frequent flyer. Despite just being in the clinic one week and four days ago, with a history of migraine for which he received treatment, he is back with severe headaches and agitation. As a care provider, I would eagerly enquire about the patient’s socioeconomic situation. According to Kogut (2020), 14.2% of Black non-elderly people did not have health insurance in 2018, compared to 8.6% of Whites. Furthermore, Tolbert et al. (2020) demonstrate that 21% of non-elderly insured recently lost or changed employment, whereas 13% recently lost Medicaid eligibility. Mr. Shawn would be unable to afford the prescriptions, leading to non-adherence and a high frequency of hospitalization for similar symptoms.
In terms of spirituality, I would be concerned about the patient’s spiritual perspective on his frequent hospitalizations. While some patients acquire gloomy attitudes and lose faith in the purpose of life, others grow to accept their situation (Huang et al., 2020). This indicates that Mr. Shawn’s situation would worsen if he lost hope in his recovery path; but, if he accepts his situation and wishes for recovery and healing, he would undoubtedly get better. Regarding lifestyle, migraine sufferers may be physically less mobile (activity might be a trigger for the disease), predisposing them to other ailments. To achieve better holistic treatment, the socioeconomic, spiritual, and lifestyle components of the patient’s life must be taken into account when assessing him. Five Specific Questions to gather a Medical History and assess Mr. Shawn’s Health Risks
- How did the headache begin, and how long has it been present?
- Do you have a headache on one side of your head or on both sides? (is it bilateral or unilateral?)
- Do you have any other symptoms in addition to the headache (ask about visual or other auras)?
- Have you found any aggravating or alleviating factors for your headache?
- Do you have to skip work or other activities because of your headaches? Functional Assessments and Cultural Diversity Awareness in Health Assessment Paper
