Evolving Nursing Philosophy and Experiences

As nurses, our practices and experiences are ever-evolving, day to day, month to month, and year to year. To be a nurse is to practice “critical knowing,” and philosophy can be considered

a mode of criticality; that is, to adopt a critical stance is to claim a philosophical approach in nursing (Sharifi-Heris & Bender, 2023). My nursing philosophy and

experience will continue to progress due to this program and my commitment to being a permanent learner. Evolving Nursing Philosophy and Experiences Essay

My Career and Thought Evolvement

I graduated from nursing school as a registered nurse in 2019. Right out of my associate’s degree nursing program, I became an intraoperative nurse. Honestly, I did not even think of

nursing philosophy at this time. After I got my bachelor’s degree in nursing, I became a multi-department director, and I began to think of nursing philosophy in the scope of nursing leadership. I

was exposed to new nursing specialties as a director, such as intensive care and medical-surgical units. Coming out of the operating room and into bedside nursing changed how I thought of my

nursing practice. In 2023, I made a career change and left my level four trauma center, a forty-bed hospital, and joined an operating room team as a clinical team leader at a level one trauma

center right in the heart of Dallas. Holding this position makes me think of nursing as a caregiver and leader. My medical critical thinking strengthened in five years, but my philosophical stance

grew and evolved.

Continued Evolvement

I believe that my nursing philosophy and experiences will continue to evolve and refine through this program and in my nursing future in remarkable ways to my nursing discipline. Once

I become a family nurse practitioner, I will practice using a preventive and treatment approach based on the foundations this program has taught me. My personal philosophy was partly built on Evolving Nursing Philosophy and Experiences Essay

the life experience of losing my mother to glioblastoma brain cancer in 2017. We battled this cancer as a family for two years before her death, and I watched my mother be cared for by a

multitude of healthcare professionals, but it was the nursing staff that impacted her and I the most. I would watch as they physically cared for her, yet they would do it in a way that involved a

spiritual friendship, showing unmeasurable compassion and care. This program has already led me to dive deeper into theory, philosophy, and how I nurse my patients. My professional identity

will continue to advance. This program will strengthen and validate my philosophy as I become an advanced practice nurse. Caring is specific to unique situations and encounters among nurses

and their patients (Bender, et al., 2021). As I venture further into this program, I will gain more experience that will shape me as a professional, nurse, and caregiver.

Conclusion

In our careers, we experience something new almost daily, depending on our chosen specialty. We develop our thoughts, beliefs, and philosophies as the years pass in our professional

stance. I believe this program will remold my philosophies and goals and create new and exciting experiences for myself in the profession of nursing. I will provide a higher level of care for

patients and their families as an advanced practice nurse. Evolving Nursing Philosophy and Experiences Essay

DISCUSSION #2 FOR REPLY:

Within my six years of nursing, I have encountered various positive and negative situations that has contributed to my profession development. A combination of these experiences has molded who I am, my approach, and execution in the profession. My dedication in pursing an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner lies in my commitment to being a lifelong learner. The journey through this program will dynamically evolve my role in the profession as I transition to from a nursing role to a provider role. “The most significant implication of continuing education is its ability to enhance practice and promote health of the public” (Gallagher, 2007, p. 472). School will enhance my nursing knowledge that enable me to become a component provider.

My professional identity will be redefined as I continue towards higher education. In reading a self-reflection article by two new advanced practice nurses (APN) the identified the challenges in the transition to the advance practice nurse role. They used Banners’ novice to expert model as a self-reflection tool to assist in their transition and evaluate their competency (Latham & Fahey, 2006). We all remember our transition from novice to expert registered nurses, I look forward to investigating this tool to assist in my transition as an APN. It is likely that my nursing philosophy will evolve towards a combination of nursing and provider. I will this course to assist in the identification of a theory that will include my nursing background and importance of caring with the responsibilities of diagnosing, treating, educating, and providing component medical care. One area of opportunity that I need to into incorporate into my practice is continued research in evidence-based practice. The importance of incorporating evidence-based practice will inform clinical practice and assist in decision making (Mackey & Bassendoswki, 2017). As I encounter and welcome these opportunities, I look forward to the changes that this educational journey presents. Evolving Nursing Philosophy and Experiences Essay
