Ethical values are critical for health workers. Ethical practice is the foundation for nurses who have to deal with numerous ethical issues daily. The ethical dilemmas that nurses experience often conflict with the code of ethics and the nurse’s ethical values. Nurses have a duty to advocate for patients and should find a balance while delivering care. There are for main ethical principles that nurses should adhere to when providing care to their patients. These include beneficence, autonomy, non-maleficence, and justice (McDermott-Levy et al., 479). Nurses should provide care to patients and refrain from maltreating patients, minimize harm and promote good towards the patients. This is the beneficence ethical principle. Healthcare providers must demonstrate this by providing a balance of benefits against risks to the patients. Helping the patients with tasks they are unable to do themselves, keeping rails in the wards and bathrooms to keep patients from falling and providing medications at the right time are all ways that nurses can uphold the beneficence principle.
Justice as an ethical principle requires that nurses treat all patients the same. One of the main issues that impacts this aspect of care is the fact that not all patients can afford to have insurance. Therefore, nurses have to turn down patients due to organizational policies requiring them to attend to patients who can pay. This issue makes it impossible for nurses to offer the same quality care to all patients, especially in the cases where one patient can pay and another is unable to pay (McDermott-Levy et al., 475). According to the nursing code of ethics, nurses should recognize their own integrity and moral character and clearly understand the fundamental ethical principles
