A philosophy of nursing is a statement detailing a nurse’s beliefs, principles, and values that describe their purpose in nursing and what makes nursing meaningful to them. Each nurse has their nursing philosophy, while organizations are required to develop a clear philosophy of nursing, guiding nursing staff and enabling them to have a common understanding of the purpose of nursing. Deeb et al. (2024) note that an individual’s philosophy of nursing may change over time, influenced by changes in knowledge, experience, and practice. In this discussion, I will share how my nursing philosophy and experiences will evolve and refine throughout this program and my future in nursing. Discussion Post: Nursing Philosophy Evolution

As I continue with the program, I am learning different concepts related to nursing, deepening my understanding of the art and science of the discipline. Hence, I have had to modify my philosophy of nursing to incorporate new beliefs and principles. In addition, I believe my philosophy will continue to evolve as I gain more knowledge and experience in nursing. For instance, exploring nursing theories has broadened my perspectives on my role as a nurse, thus getting me thinking about how to incorporate the perspectives into my current and future practice.

Furthermore, an individual’s philosophy of nursing statement is greatly influenced by their motivation to nursing. van der Cingel and Brouwer (2021) note that nursing motivation may change as the nurse gains more experience and encounters challenges. However, as I am exposed to different challenges and experiences throughout the program and in future practice, I believe I will be pushed to evaluate my beliefs, values, and preconceived notions, often driving change to my motivation and philosophy. For instance, considering my initial motivation was my caring and empathetic nature, different experiences will push me to include motivations such as maintaining ethical considerations in nursing, such as justice.

My philosophy of nursing will continue to evolve as I gain more knowledge, understanding, and experience in the field. I intend to remain relevant and aligned with the needs of my patients by incorporating new perspectives into my beliefs and values. In addition, I will constantly evaluate them to ensure growth and that I am competent to meet the needs of the dynamic healthcare environment.  Discussion Post: Nursing Philosophy Evolution
