Part One

The board of nursing in every state is essential in regulating nurses’ practice in their particular state. The Texas Board of Nursing has not been left behind. It not only regulates practice for the nurses’ sake but also protects the public. In my opinion, there are several ways in which the Texas Board of Nursing protects the public.

One of the primary and essential ways that the Texas BON protects the public is by regulating the standards of practice for nursing. The BON regulates the quality of nursing services offered to the public to ensure that the public gets high-quality and safe care. By dictating the type of nurses who can offer care services in specific care settings, the board ensures that the services are offered by expert nurses in the field, thus maintaining a high quality of care services. Additionally, the board provides licenses for nurses practicing in the state, ensures that the nurses meet the state’s licensing requirements, and enhances action-taking for nurses who exhibit unsafe nursing practices, thus protecting the public.

Secondly, the board regulates nursing education to ensure that nurses receive a high-quality education. Proper nursing education, in turn, translates to high standards in care quality. Therefore, by regulating nursing education in the state, the board also protects the public.  Board of Nursing Audio Discussion Paper

The third way in which the Texas Board of Nursing is by regulating nursing research. Nursing research is regulated to avoid exploitation of the public by nursing researchers, especially when the research uses human subjects. More so, the board ensures that nursing research using human subjects is safe for the public.

Finally, the board of nursing is responsive in a public health crisis, such as Covid-19, thus protecting the public from the magnitude of the crisis. For instance, the BON called out for nurses with inactive, retired, and delinquent licenses and would have wanted to assist in the Covid-19 crisis to ensure that the public got the needed services as the need arose.

Part Two

There are several lessons that I learned from the Board of Nursing Course. One key takeaway point from the course is that continuing education must be completed in the Registered Nurses area of practice. The field of health is diverse and dynamic. Through constant research and development, new recommendations and evidence-based practices are developed from time to time. Therefore, nurses must constantly engage in continuous education, remain relevant, and keep up to date with the current practice. Therefore, continuous education in practice is crucial since it encourages me to seek professional development and up-to-date practice in my particular area, using continuous education. Most importantly, the BON supports continuous education for RNs using nursing scholarships, grants, and financial aid, which encourages RNs to engage in continuous education. RNs are also allowed to have at least 20 contact hours of continuing nursing education, which means the nurse can still practice while enrolled in continuing nursing education. The other key takeaway is that the scope of practice is clearly defined for each level of nursing: the Licensed Vocational Nurses, the Registered Nurses, and the Advanced Practice Registered Nurses. The point is important to me since it clarifies what is expected of me based on my level of practice. For instance, the LVN is expected to provide focused nursing care under the supervision of an RN, APRN, physician, or physician assistant. On the other hand, the RN is allowed to administer medications, supervision or teaching in nursing, and the administration, supervision and evaluation of nursing policies, practices, and procedures. On the other hand, the APRN can practice either individually or in a care institution, in midwifery, anesthetist, mental health, and primary and preventive health, among others.
