    Lynette,

    Lakeland Clinic

I am honored to be entrusted with leading the team to address the diversity issue at Lakeland Clinic. I understand how critical this task is and am committed to working toward a solution that will benefit all of our employees and the community at large. Having considered the email, I recognize that the primary worry is that the staff at the clinic might be unable to build trusting relationships with the community, especially with local people of Haitian background. This stems from a need for more knowledge about their cultural needs and expectations. Nevertheless, I understand that this presents an opportunity for meaningful improvement in outcomes for both employees and community members. I also understand that for an organization to be culturally competent, employees must communicate effectively and appreciate the diversity of cultures to be culturally competent. The purpose of this email is to outline my approach as the team leader addressing the diversity issue at Lakeland Clinic and to provide a detailed plan for how I plan to facilitate collaboration among the team effectively. My goal is to guide and facilitate the work of the committee to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for both employees and the community. Assessment 2: Leadership and Group Collaboration

    My Leadership Qualities and Roles

My role would be to guide and facilitate the work of the committee addressing the diversity issue at Lakeland Clinic as the team leader. Providing leadership by example and empowering the team would be my approach. To ensure that all committee members understand the scope of the project and work together towards a common desired outcome, I emphasize clear communication and setting shared goals. This project would require a change from the usual practice; thus, team members would need to understand the need for this change. Therefore, my other role as a team leader would be to ensure that I communicate this change to all members and that all members. Diversity in nursing includes disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, veteran status, as well as differences in background, experience, education, and thought in addition to race and gender. This awareness change among staff members will be the start of a change process that the interprofessional team will oversee. Therefore, desirable leadership qualities for this project will include effective communication, change communication, cultural diversity, and shared goal setting.

    Communication Strategy

Communication, collaboration, and inclusivity would be my guiding principles when leading and communicating. I will communicate openly and honestly with the team members during scheduled team meetings. In my communications, I will ensure that all team members understand the scope of the project and the goals that they need to work together to achieve. I will accomplish this by seeking feedback during these meetings and providing follow-up communications through emails to emphasize team goals, scope, and roles. I will also encourage team members to communicate with each other and through the team leader when direct member-member communication is not feasible. Effective communication would also reduce the risk of conflicts among team members because they will be aware of their roles and the need for teamwork spirit (Stubbe, 2020). George Bernard Shaw opined that the greatest problem in communication is the illusion that it has occurred (Mysak, 2019). Therefore, I will always seek clarifications & feedback and follow up on my communications.  Assessment 2: Leadership and Group Collaboration

    Leadership Style

I will use transformational leadership to oversee and manage team members and activities. Transformational leadership emphasizes inspiring and motivating subjects to achieve set goals. Transformational leadership will ensure that the interprofessional team is motivated towards ensuring that staff members change their practice to promote cultural diversity. One personality that I recommend for this leadership role is Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum. Dr. Tatum is an educator, a psychologist, and an administrator (Tatum, n.d.). In addition to her expertise in diversity and inclusion, she has been able to translate her knowledge into actionable steps for individuals, organizations, and communities to promote more equitable and inclusive environments, which is an integral aspect of transformational leadership. Shared vision, astute communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and empowerment of others to take up roles are qualities of leadership that Dr. Tatum and I share in common (Huston, 2022).

My key strengths in addressing this issue are effective communication, interprofessional collaboration, and team empowerment. I have interacted and worked with colleagues of various cadres in clinical practice in various capacity leadership capacities. I have had an opportunity to exercise my leadership skills among colleagues at the unit level. However, my weakness relevant to this project is my relatively limited experience at the organizational level. However, this limitation of higher-level leadership experience would be compensated by consultation with various experts in specific fields.  Assessment 2: Leadership and Group Collaboration

My Role as a Project Leader: I would use the Transformational leadership model as the project leader of Lakeland Clinic’s diversity team. Key roles as a project leader in this team would be creating and sharing vision, communicating project visions and goals to all stakeholders, empowering team members to achieve the team goals through various motivational models and seeking and availing necessary resources, educating the team on cultural diversity and needs and providing leading examples for team members to adopt. According to Nair & Adetayo (2019), educating staff on cultural diversity improves their diversity competencies on age, gender, race, and ethnic diversity in mixed populations. This approach will not only aim at attracting change in cultural sensitivity and competency but also maintain this change through various generations of staff. I believe that this approach will strengthen the organization’s cultural sensitivity culture.

    Effective Collaboration Approach

Meeting education and clinical needs for a culturally diverse health population, I would ensure that the staff also meet their educational needs for cultural diversity. To collaborate with them effectively, I would create a collaborative environment where the team is rewarded for their success. Using Kotter’s change model, celebrating small wins cumulatively contribute to the ultimate change success. I will motivate the team to achieve more victories by recognizing these successes. However, I would not ignore near misses and team failures because they will also provide an evaluative value to the team’s progress to success. Therefore, my collaborative approach will aim to bring together team members by sharing wins to promote sharing the team’s vision and goals.

I am committed to leading this team with a focus on collaboration, clear communication, empowerment, and inclusivity to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all at the Lakeland Clinic. Assessment 2: Leadership and Group Collaboration
