Course Catalog Description
Care for the family in crisis. Application of concepts of growth and development, health maintenance and promotion. Emphasis on observational skills, interpersonal relationships; communications and psychodynamics of human behavior. Theoretical concepts and clinical nursing skills contained in this course are consistent with the skills standards developed for the State of Illinois. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course.
Prerequisites

Course Objectives
- Incorporate developmentally appropriate therapeutic activities in managing clients with
bio-psychosocial alterations.
- Implement a comprehensive teaching plan in the delivery of care for clients with
bio-psychosocial alterations.
- Collaborate with the health care team, family and community in the development of
health promotion behavior for clients with medical-surgical alterations.
- Manage the care needs for clients with medical-surgical alterations.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Develop a care plan for a client with a complex physiological alteration
- Implement a plan of care addressing psychosocial/physiological issues of a client facing a potentially terminal illness.
- Participate in the placement and management of peripheral lines, central catheters and other indwelling catheters of clients using principles of asepsis.
- Document the effectiveness of medications administered
- Evaluate and document the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.
- Perform a nutritional assessment for clients with complex physiological alterations
- Implement and evaluate the effectiveness of education delivered to client and family.
- Coordinate a plan of care in collaboration with other disciplines for continuity of care.
- Formulate a plan of care for an adult client that takes into consideration legal and ethical issues, and principals of ethical practice.
- Devise a plan of care that promotes wellness in a client specific manner.
- Identify all physiological/psychosocial alterations based on history and physical assessments.
- Manage care delivery using the nursing process for assigned clients.
- Recognize when additional resources are required for care of client.
- Recognize the implications of institutional guidelines and policies in the implementation of nursing interventions.
- Participate in the preparation of clients for diagnostic tests, medical interventions and other procedures.
- Provide client care throughout the clinical course (pre-procedure, post procedure care).
- Identify the appropriate technology required for performing nursing assessments.

Suggested Methods of Assessment and Evaluation
All nursing courses required for the nursing program will be evaluated based on satisfactory completion of class, lab and clinical competencies. Students are required to achieve a satisfactory evaluation in the lab and clinical components of each nursing course. Numerical grades below 80% (C) in the nursing courses and/or unsatisfactory lab and/or clinical evaluation for the semester are considered unsatisfactory attainment of course competencies.
Written Evaluations
Two multiple choice question exams. Exam 1 is worth 20%, Exam 2 is worth 20%. A Midterm is worth 30% and Final is worth 30%.

*Medication Dosage Calculation Test – Achievement of 90% on math competency quiz is required. If a student receives less than 90% they will be required to schedule two math tutoring sessions in the Tutoring Center. A validation form of attendance will be required for each tutoring session. The Medication Dosage Calculation Test will be proctored during the 1st to 3rd week. Students must achieve a 90% score on the medication dosage calculation test in order to progress in the nursing course. A second attempt will be permitted if needed. Those receiving < 90% will be provided a third and final opportunity to test. Failure to achieve the 90% score after the 3rd test will result in a course grade of “F” for unsatisfactory attainment of course competencies. Refer to the AAS Nursing Student Handbook.

No Show Withdrawal: If a student registered for the course before the start time of the first-class period, but did not attend the first-class session of a course that meets only once per week and failed to notify the instructor of his or her intentions to continue the class, the Registrar’s Office will remove the student from the course.
